JOIN HANDS and SUPPORT EQUALITY

GIVE TODAY to help support equality and human rights in the Republic of Latvia and in the Baltic States.

“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. [...]” – Article 1, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UN General Assembly, 1948)

“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice...” – Martin Luther King Jr., Leader of the Civil Rights Movement (1961)

Currently, the Labor Law of Latvia is the only law that explicitly mentions sexual orientation as grounds on which discrimination is not permitted. No other clear protections for LGBT people exist in Latvia. Stereotypes and prejudice are still prevalent. A road to a fully equal society in Latvia is a long one and you can help us walk it.

Long way traveled, much more to go

“Mozaika” is an association of LGBT people and their friends, which was founded in 2006 after an unpleasant experience of violence against pride march in 2005. In order to promote equality and understanding for all members of the society, especially the LGBT people, “Mozaika” has worked hard to educate the society, fight against discrimination and hate crimes.

In the last six years, “Mozaika” has made great strides in recognition and respect of the LGBT community. The annual pride event location rotates between the three Baltic capitals and has made the LGBT community in the Baltic States a united one. The organization houses the first LGBT library in Latvia. Its members have organized LGBT film festivals and open discussions and seminars and have participated in various sports games. In order to encourage people to come out of the closet, “Mozaika” has also helped to create the first LGBT youth web-resource “Skapis.eu” (The Closet). “Mozaika” is working hard to lobby the Parliament to pass a same-sex partnership law and to protect all families.

Why GIVING NOW is important?

The Latvian government does not support non-governmental organizations and if it did, an LGBT organization would be the last to get financial support due to controversial nature of LGBT issues in Latvia. Majority of Latvian residents are not supportive of LGBT inclusion and homophobia is the norm. Most businesses do not openly support LGBT rights in fear of homophobic backlash and labeling as gay friendly and “anti-family values.” YOUR SUPPORT is what can help to change the status quo.

This year Baltic Pride takes place in Riga from May 30 to June 2 and YOUR GIFT can help make it an even greater success whether you live in Latvia, the European Union or anywhere in the world.

“Mozaika” envisions a Latvia where lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their families are treated equally under the law and embraced as full members of the society, at home, at work and in any other community. Baltic Pride is an important tool in achieving it. Right now we need financial support to carry it out.
